Dog breaths in the house

Dogs with dentastix in mouth
Time for "tooth-brushing" with Dentastix
The dog dynamics in the family has changed considerably this past year. Some of us still miss our Benji Yorkie very much. But our Pavement Special takes it in her stride. She is very much spoilt, and has earned a spot next to our beds in the evening. She only jumps up early mornings when the alarm goes off, and we are trying to get in an extra 10 minutes.

The Eldest has gotten two dogs this year. They are both Pekingese breeds, and both come from situations that were not as favourable. My daughter is very much involved with Peke Rescue SA, and has helped them with their social media, as well as get some of the dogs a home. She has done her bit as well with adopting one. Sometimes they stay with us, and sometimes they are at my daughter's fiance's house. They were so much spoilt, because she took them everywhere, even to work, but now she has taken up a new job. Luckily the two keeps each other company during the day. Our Pavement Special are not as impressed with them, but she tolerates them when they visit.

We did not know much of the the Pekingese breed before this, but they are lovely and very intelligent dogs. They are also great with children, and as companions. They are very cute!

We got the Pedigree Dentastix as a blog drop a while ago. The dogs sees it as a treat, but it helps with dental care. Apparently we should be brushing our dogs teeth also every day. (Cue "guilt") We are not doing it, but feeding them the Dentastix helped me feel a bit better. Their breaths are more palatable after chewing on it. Because smelly breaths give an indication of teeth health. (Cue "guilt" again)

Children separated from their parents - Surely this can't be?

Canva poster "Children need to be with their parents, with family walking into sunrise
Children need to be with their parents
Time for the soap box! A news story that is so terrible. Surely in this time and age we can't be doing this to people? While the outrage grows, the White House is defending the immigration policy. Taking children away from their families.

Why is this allowed to happen, and why is nobody doing anything? We are living in times of knowledge and insight, but we are so barbaric?

How can anybody sleep at night when knowing that children are forcefully removed from their parents? Surely their parents are looking for a better life for their children? That's why they are applying for asylum?

What am I missing? What am I not seeing? I don't understand it.

It feels as if my joy has been stolen by hearing of such atrocities. It is a human right violation of the highest malice. We know NOW we will come back to this and say that it is wrong. Why do it in the first place?

Some of the stories popping up on my timelines:
- Melania took a diplomatic stand against it: Melania Trump takes a brave stand against her husband's policies
- A Quora question: Did the Obama administration separate families at the border...
- Twitter threads of sounds of children being separated from their parents. (I can't and won't listen to it. I am bawling my eyes out already.)

I hope the lawmakers change the policies and very soon.

What can we do to help? I feel so powerless...

Grade 4 exams done and dusted

Choir photo
Miss Fine in choir
The holidays can not come soon enough. The first exams are done and dusted. The schools are closing for three weeks in winter this coming Friday. The children are extremely tired after a very busy semester and exams.

I am so proud of Miss Fine. She handled this semester with far less anxiety than I did. My own advice - to myself ;-) - on how to survive exams for moms helped me in stepping back. I am reminded again that it is better parenting when you are there to help, but not to do everything for them.

Miss Fine devised her own study method of compiling her work in very small booklets. It was in conjunction with art work, but it worked for her. She said the teacher also did not complain when she saw her making the booklets. She understood it was for study purposes. :-)

The exam papers have been coming back for signatures, and it all looks good. I am so proud of you, Miss Fine. Not only did she do netball this semester, but she also took part in a choir musical which culminated in the final show this past weekend (see photo by Deb above). They have worked so hard for the show, and they enjoyed it so much!

Unfortunately we are still working, but we are looking forward to the upcoming wedding. Miss Fine is going to be the flower girl and I am going to be MOB - Mother of the Bride. We can't wait!

What are your plans for the school holidays?

Wedding - MOB Dress-ready
The excitement is gaining momentum in the family. In less than two months we are going to have a WEDDING. I am going to be "Mother of the Bride". I am going to be MOB (He-He saw this on t-shirts, and quite like it). It is not a scary or a sad concept. I love it! I have a daughter, the Eldest,  who has found her Love, and she is happy. What more can I ask for? Nothing.

J's Revive Spa - a Sanctuary in the City

We need a place to relax and rejuvenate. J's Revive Wellness Spa do just that!  I was fortunate enough to use my afternoon off last week to get a total spoil, with a facial, mani and pedi.

Spoiler alert! I had such a good experience and can only swoon about the luxury pamper I had. I was given the treatment in exchange for the review, but it was SOOOO good. I am already planning how I can fit it into my monthly schedule and budget. It's all about priorities, you all. ;-)

Upbeat Annie JR at Peoples Theatre - WIN family tickets

Red theatre curtain with Annie - Peoples Theatre
Annie Jr - Peoples Theatre
Annie JR opened last week at Peoples Theatre in Braamfontein. We are Peoples Theatre groupies by now. The Show always ticks all the boxes. Great entertainment. Great cast. Great script. Great fun. Great for the whole family, from ages 2 to 100. Annie JR did not disappoint. The ever-fresh 1924 comic character story of an optimistic upbeat Annie JR has been done so many times, but the story never disappoints. Annie is such a breath of fresh air in her circumstances; so much so that you the children are cheering her from the sidelines all the way. Singing "Tomorrow" with gusto at the end of the musical.
SO. MUCH. FUN.

Theatre veteran Jill Gerard says Annie is a firm favourite. "Annie stands for innate decency, courage and optimism in the face of hard times, pessimism and despair. Shje is an inspiration all of us."

Peoples Theatre has made available two family tickets (4 each) to be won here.

How to survive exams - 3 things for Moms

I  am writing this post to qualm my own anxiety about the first exams of Grade 4. Exams are tough on moms, and the whole family, as well. Trying to help your kid to learn, but also ensuring they get enough sleep and nutrients, and the lunch-boxes are sorted. Our kid also has to stay at school, because she does not have the luxury of being fetched after the morning exam time. The children are allowed to go home, and they can stay at home on the days they are not writing. Miss Fine has to stay at school until Dad can go and fetch her a bit earlier in the afternoons... Shame, man. (Now we have  parent-guilt as well. *sigh*)

The following list makes me stay on top of this stressful time, and I keep reminding myself of this.

Future Nation Schools spearheading the African education revolution

Future Nation Schools are an exciting new private venture in schooling in South Africa. Their preschools and primary schools are based in Lyndhurst and Fleurhof with another preschool in Randburg. These private schools use the project based learning method in their schools with their preschools being Montessori focused. I had the pleasure of visiting the Future Nation School in Fleurhof, and was inspired by the architectural outlay of the school premises, as well as the educational zest of the teachers.

Future Nations Schools - Fleurhof
Education is the best way there is to change and take control of circumstances. Education changes a person's life, and through that person the world is changing. The access to knowledge is through the click of a button. Education is rapidly evolving to produce students who are not only skilled enough to deal with these changes, but are also more innovative and creative in coming up with solutions to our current challenges.

Future Nation Schools’ aim is to spearhead the African education revolution by providing a model that is both futuristic, technology enabled and epitomises excellence in Africa!

It's a vegetarian life

Vegetarian lifestyle text over plate of green salad
Vegetarian lifestyle
It's amusing to hear people's response on being a vegetarian. It's as if they have to defend their own meat-eating lifestyle. I don't mind other people being meat-eaters. As far as I am concerned we are responsible for our own health and well-being. I used to be a meat-eater for half of my life, and I cannot impose my change of mind on anybody. The same with religion.

I am being a vegetarian for myself, my health and being kind to animals, our fellow living creatures on the planet. I would not be able to look back at my life, and say that I should have... One thing that I can tick off for life!

I am not struggling to be a vegetarian. There's always an option, and I have become used to take food along when I know there won't be much vegetarian options. I always have to shake my head when people ask about my protein intake. That is one of the most common responses, or queries. :-)

I have been building a Pinterest Board about all the come-backs about being vegetarian. It seems it is common. What don't you know about being vegetarian?

Bring the family together with board games #PrimaGamesFest

Open Rummikub box
Rummikub with a Twist
{WIN}

It's winter time, and more time for being indoors, and spending time with the family. Board games is a great way to spend quality (and quantity) time together. Miss Fine has been working on her life skills, and playing board games is a great way in helping her to manage the melt-downs. We can already see a marked improvement when we play board games together.  We will definitely be doing it more after the exams, but in the meantime it is also a great stress reliever when taking a break from studying.

Here's how you can win Rummikub with a Twist, with extra Jokers to add more fun and skill to the game. As far as board games go, Rummikub is one of our favourites, as the rules are not that difficult, but you get more skilled with each game being played.

There are so many women who are inspiring, and who make's you question your own life - your existential existence. (Said with a wry smile.)  I know it's not good to put a person on a pedestal, as we are surely to be disappointed. But I find myself regularly asking myself: What will she do?

Meet the Fingerlings Baby Unicorns - WIN

Fingerlings Baby Unicorn in hand
She's Gigi, a  Fingerlings Baby Unicorn

There are new Fingerlings on the toy scene. We are playing with Gigi, the Fingerling Baby Unicorn who loves to grab onto things, especially your fingers. This smart pet responds to noise, motion and touch with special unicorn sounds. The sounds and the responses do differ, and it takes a while to learn all 40 animations. (She comes with a manual.)

Gigi has adorable blinking eyes and her head turns in response if you pet her, rock her to sleep or hold her upside down. You can blow her a kiss, and she will kiss you right back! You can also brush her soft rainbow mane and tail and she has a tiny horseshoe on her rump. She is a magical friend at your fingertips!

Miss Fine loves playing with her, and has made her her own house in a box, with bed and everything. I have to share it on Instagram, but here was the first meeting.

Woodrock Sterilisation Clinic - a good news story!

Ribbon cutting ceremony at Woodrock Sterilisation Clinic
Co-founders Nicholas Meldau and Estelle Meldau cut the ribbon to open the Woodrock Sterlisation Clinic with Deborah Blane and the lovely Rosabella Catherine Merle Blane the 2nd from Schnauzer Friends South Africa.
We love to hear stories with a positive outcomes. Especially when there are animals involved. Woodrock Animal Rescue in Hennops River was able to the raise their goal of R1-million to build a state-of-the-art animal sterilisation clinic. It was a dream because their mission states that they are pro-life and want to better the lives of all the animals they rescue and take care of.

The celebration for the sterilisation clinic was held this past weekend. We could unfortunately not attend, but I send a few questions to the co-founders of the rescue centre, husband and wife team, Estelle and Nicholas Meldau. They unveiled the initiative that will go far in helping Woodrock to make a difference to the lives of so many animals. The centre works to educate the surrounding communities about pet care, health and sterilisation, as well as medically treating rescue animals.

Had a good laugh about the anecdotal stories, Woodrock... (see below)

Meat-free Monday win - Quinoa Salad

Quinoa and chickpea salad in white bowl
Quinoa salad with chickpeas

Mondays are the worst with trying to conjure up easy and filling dinner ideas. One of us comes late with a hungry Miss in tow. This past Monday it was my turn to make dinner. A friend of mine made this quinoa salad at a braai (barbecue) a while ago, and it is simply delicious. I did not have all the ingredients that the recipe suggested, but it worked just as fine.

The first time I saw your faces

Photo of two daughters - 9 year old and 24 year old
Daughters

With Mother's Day coming up and having all the warm fuzzy feelings about being a mother, and having a Mom whom I only appreciate more and more... I feel blessed. I have signed up for the first time for the Mother's Day Connect on Sunday where groups of moms will visit new moms in hospitals. You can still sign up here: Embrace Mother's Day Connect. It's only an hour out of your day, and you can still be back with your family on Sunday.

I was very lucky to have support and family, and we could prepare for both our daughters. I can't imagine how scary it must be when you don't have that?

I can still remember how I felt when I first saw these precious faces.

Thank you, dear Hubby! There is nothing like an anniversary of taking stock of your relationship and of what is important. We celebrated our 14th yesterday. It really goes by too quick (*sic*). Life feels a bit harsh at this moment, but we can still go home to each other and our home, and slay life from our protective family nest.

WE are still having fun together (check the Instagram photos), and laughing together!

The lunch-box conundrum - We have not find the perfect solution yet

Lunch box with pizza, maize snack, banana and chocolate
Dr, Oetker pizza slice, Woollies maze snack, banana and chocolate
The lunch-box trauma on parents. It IS trauma, Miss Fine! I am noting it here, again, for future reference. To spend so much time buying, planning and putting the daily lunch-box together... And to get it back the evening, uneaten... Yesterday she suspected there was some onions with her chicken mayonnaise, and she left it uneaten. There was no onions.*sigh*

I don't have the perfect lunch-box suggestions. I know my lunch-boxes are not that healthy. We are just glad when it gets eaten. I am so glad when I get suggestions as to what to put in it. Most recent we could add Yo-Jelly to the lunch-box. We also got Dr. Oetker pizza slices a while ago as a blog drop. I love the idea, but Miss Fine doesn't like it when it is cold. Sometimes she eats it, and sometimes not.

A new take on Disney Ducktales - Disney XD

Funko Pop Scrooge McDuck with Disney Ducktales XD activity book
Disney #DuckTales - #DisneyAfrica
DuckTales is still a firm favourite of good family fun. We all grew up with Huey, Dewey and Louie and all the mischief adventures they got into. With Donald Duck, and of course Scrooge McDuck.
The long-awaited new take on the iconic Disney DuckTales launched this month on Disney XD with a special episode entitled Woo-oo!. The follow-up series launches with two back-to-back episodes every day from Monday 23rd to Thursday 26th April at 16:00.

We were invited to a pre-screening of Disney DuckTales and Big Hero 6, and it was such a treat. The stories are fresh, but with all the quirks and fantasy of the original characters.

The lessons we have learnt from our daughter

Girl jumping at Bounce Inc
Miss Fine
Laura-Kim's post about the lessons she has learnt from her 4-year old inspires this post. It made me smile. We learn so much about life and ourselves by what our children bring to the table. You would think that they are carbon imprints of ourselves, but NOT at all! They are their own personalities, and they teach us more about life than we sometimes think we teach them about life!

Life lessons we have learnt from our daughter

  • We learnt to have more patience. Patience towards ourselves, but also towards other people. (We are still busy learning this one.)
  • We can each think differently about life, and it is all okay. There is not only one recipe for life.
  • We don't have to loose our shizz when somebody else loses theirs. (Still learning...)
  • A melt-down as an adult is also not pretty. You can't tell somebody to stay calm when you yourself can't stay calm.
  • Staying calm!
  • Being happy is not always inherent to our nature. We sometimes have to work on it.
  • Trying to do something is already 99% done. Do not discourage the process.
  • Doing things differently should also be commended, and not reprimanded. We all learn the most by failing and trying again. By saying you know that it won't work, won't help. Life is the best teacher of all.
  • Appreciation of what we have, and how little we really need to make us happy.

This is a list I am going to come back to.

What life lessons have you learnt from your children?

Finally we can buy Yo-Jelly for the lunchbox

Yo-Jelly funny pose
#YoJellyisback

The headaches of what to put in the school lunch-box starts again tomorrow. As soon as I think I have found the perfect combination, our Miss gets bored with it, and it comes back uneaten. I am regularly one of those parents telling their children about children without any food. The children in war-torn countries, and the children in Africa, and the children who does not have parents...
And all we get is the blank stare...

Yo-Jelly mascot with children dancing at Bounce Inc

We were invited to the re-launch of Yo-Jelly in South Africa. It was at Bounce Inc. at Waterfall Centre in Midrand on Saturday. Miss had a great time, and she was so excited about Yo-Jelly. Because "Now you can finally buy Yo-Jelly for me." She was always telling me to buy it in the shops, because "the other children gets it in their lunch-boxes". But it was just too much sugar to even consider it. Luckily they have revamped the taste with added vitamins, with less sugar, and more milk.

Inspiring women in business - Louise Archary of Bumps and Bundles of Joy

Louise Archary of Bumps & Bundles of Joy
One of the perks of being a blogger is to meet inspiring people all the time. Sister Louise Archary was sitting next to me at the recent MamaMagic New Products Awards. She has her own family wellness business. I wish I knew her when Little Miss was small, as I had a few awful encounters at my local clinic. They managed to always make me feel like a bad mother. We as moms need all the help we can get while being pregnant and especially helping us keeping the little ones "alive". This is exactly what Louise does.

Louise was kind enough to answer a few questions.

Louise Archary of Bumps & Bundles of Joy

Louise, who are you? (The elevator pitch ;-) )

My name is Louise Archary or ‘’Sister Louise’’ as my clients call me . I am a wife and proud mother of two and a private practicing registered nurse and midwife, qualified for about 15 years already.  I have achieved qualifications in: General Nursing, Psychiatry, Community Health and Midwifery. My aim is to support mums during and after pregnancy and to assist in the facilitation of overall family wellbeing.  I also consider myself to wear the hats of Prenatal Educator, Wellness Coach and Specialist in Immunizations.

A Personal Fitness Tracker bfit Move2 - Review

Personal fitness tracker bfit Move 2 with heart rate monitor flashing
bfit Move 2
There are so many personal fitness trackers on the market. I used to love my Fitbit Zip, but it got lost, and it did not measure all the activities wanted. My phone made up for most, but it's not the same, and I don't want to carry it everywhere. I also don't have the budget to buy the expensive trackers.

My daughter won the bfit Move 2 personal tracker in a competition, and I bought myself one while it was still on special. The trackers do not cost an arm and a leg. I got mine for 400 ZAR, which is totally doable.

I have had the tracker for two months now, and it does everything I want a tracker to do.

10 Ways Monopoly teaches Life Skills

Monopoly
We have always struggled with board games. Little Miss was not a good game player, and melt-downs used to be her go-to reaction when the game did not go in her favour. We understand it better now while she is busy learning life skills.

There are more than enough articles about the the positive impact of board games, and we will definitely incorporate it more in our lives. We've got two Monopoly sets, a Scrabble and a Rummikub at home. We gifted Miss the Rummikub in December, but we've only tried playing it once. Because, melt-downs...
