10 Reasons why I am staying in South Africa

Johannesburg skyline traffic shot with Weathershot 22 degrees
Johannesburg weather this morning
South Africa. There a daily constant barrage of people/friends that's moving overseas, or are making their living already in another spot of the world. We have family overseas who are happy. Even my husband wants to move, but I don't. I love my South Africa. I love everything we have here, and I don't think people appreciate things that we take for granted here... I got such a positive feedback from a friend today who can go overseas because she has a passport already. She says she is staying. She wants to! It is difficult to stay (or staying positive about staying), but I know it is difficult moving as well. To each what makes you most happy!

This is my list of the things that makes me happy here in South Africa:

Fun at My Little Pony Live Shows

My Little Pony Live Show with MLP and Equestria Girls on stage
MLP Live Show #FriendshipIsMagic
It was a live fest for all the My Little Pony fans. The My Little Pony Live Shows was on at the Mardi Grass Theatre at Carnival City. Judging by the queues on Saturday it was a dream for a great many little girls to see their Ponies in action.

I must confess that I am living My Little Pony vicariously through my daughter. They did not exist in the 70s. (Ouch, giving away my age.) Now I think they are the cutest ever. My daughters both loved combing and styling the hair of their My Little Ponies. I personally love the positive characters and energy of My Little Pony. The Equestria girls have upped their staying power considerably.

A Beautiful Rustic Wedding

Mr & Mrs Table decorations
Wedding Table - Patrick Pretorius Photography
We had the most memorable Wedding, the best party ever this year. The Eldest got married to the Love of her Life. It was a year of planning, finding a venue and working hard to make it all come together. The budget was very low. In the end it all came together with what could be made, specials and the generosity of friends.

Everybody was collecting cans and wine and beer bottles. It was painted or covered with paper torn from books. The Eldest also made a large number of paper protea flowers, which she used on the tables as well as in the bouquets. It was a beautiful rustic wedding in a beautiful setting, at Thatch Haven in Brits. It was the perfect spot and venue.

Here are a few photos from the wedding decorations.

Raven in South Africa

Raven Symone on stage at Montecasino Ill Grande with Raven's Home poster in background
#RavinInSA - Raven is in the house
Judging by the screams of all the excited fans last, Disney Raven's Home is a much loved series in most South African homes.  Raven-Symoné was at the SA premiere of Season 2 of Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home. The series, starring Raven-Symoné, premieres weekdays on Disney Channel (DStv Channel 303) from next week Monday, 8 October at 16:50. We got to see the first two episodes, and there's going to be a surprise for the fans. A welcome surprise... (That's all we are allowed to say for now.)

Hatching a Mermaid - Coolest ever

Nurchum Mermaid Hatch Egg, still in packaging
Ever since the hatching craze started, Miss Fine Fine had her eye on a hatching egg. Two years back the craze was sold out. We could not even get them from America when my brother came to visit. So we never got around to get a hatching egg. The excitement was high when the Nurchums Hatch Egg arrived as a blog drop.

Girl opening up bucket with Nurchum hatch egg
What she always wanted - a hatching egg!

It was indicated on the package that it was going to be a mermaid, and the countdown started...

Apparently it was going to take a while, even 14 days a-while, which was very long for a child (and Mom). But I was surprised. Miss Fine took it in her stride. She started to mark off the days on the calendar, and everyday there were more cracks starting to show. We got the egg on Tuesday, and by Friday the cracks were large enough to see something inside. We convinced Miss Fine to wait another day, and on Saturday she finally cracked it open. You can see the progress on my Instagram Highlights.

The allure of the hatching toys ticks the box for Socio Emotional Learning (SEL) toys, which teach children nurturing as well as delayed gratification. It also forms part of the collectibles craze, while the surprise aspect also adds to the fun. We knew we were getting a mermaid, but not how she would look.

Miss Fine is still busy growing the mermaid. Apparently you can let her grow, and when we take her out of the water, she will return to original size.

Nurchums are also available in Dinosaur ranges, as well as Fantasy figurines. Great for girls and boys alike.

This is perfect for a birthday persent, as well as a Christmas present. They retail for R89.99, which is fantastic! This is my best go-to birthday present and Christmas gift option sorted for the upcoming year! They are available at Plasticland, Toy Kingdom, and other independent toy shops and can also be purchased online at Takealot and Loot.

For more information, visit Pollywiggles

Disclaimer: We got this as a blog drop, but I was not asked to paid or write this.
This is just too good not to share!

Coming to a cinema near you: Smallfoot - Win tickets

SmallFoot movie poster
"Get Yeti" - SmallFoot Movie poster
Yetis or BIG Foots. Who knew they would be afraid of a SMALLfoot? Thinking of  a humans as a monster mythical creature... This is definitely a must see for the whole family. The movie will be in Ster-Kinekor cinemas from 28 September.

Perfect for the upcoming school holidays. Even better: Watching Smallfoot at the Kid's Cinema would be the perfect outing.

A Yeti called Migo (Channing Tatum) has a run-in with a small foot (a human) after a plane crashes in the Yeti world up in the clouds. Migo is terrified and curious of small foots because Yetis believe they are mythical creatures, in the same way small foots think of Yetis.   When Migo tells his tribe about his encounter, the tribe starts to panic and the stern elder of the tribe banishes him for telling tall tales.
With the help of Meechee (Zendaya) and the Smallfoot Evidentiary Society (S.E.S), which Meechee heads, Migo must come down to Earth and capture a human as evidence that small foots exist. The journey is hilarious, with lots of twists and turns, but it’s equally heart-felt with a message that sometimes what we fear, fears us too, and to never judge anyone based on what they look like.

Two readers of this blog can each win a set of 4 family tickets each.

These are the participating cinemas that the winners can win tickets:

Mall @ Carnival
Mall of Africa
Blue Route
Tyger Valley

1. Comment below with the Ster-Kinekor cinema (listed above) where you would like to go and see the movie.
2. The competition starts today, and ends Friday 28 September at 12pm.
3. Only residents of South Africa who can get to the cinema by own transport is eligible.
4. The winner will be selected by Random.org and it will be announced here and on Facebook.
5. An entry is only allowed when you have not won here in the past three months.

Good luck, Smallfoots! ;-)

Thanks, Ster-Kinekor, for the opportunity, and for giving us two tickets as well to attend.

Congrats to Jessie McKay and Leandra du Toit. Please send your email addresses?

Mrs Simpson's should be on your Dullstroom list

Portrait of Mrs Simpson inside restaurant with handbags and shoes
Wallis Simpson, the late Duchess of Windsor
We had the most amazing weekend getaway in Dullstroom two weeks back. One of the places that really deserves a mention, is Mrs Simpson's. I would not have given it a second look driving past there, but you have to go in to experience the ambiance, the people and the great food.

We started off our Friday evening at Wild about Whisky, and after that we went to Mrs. Simpson's. The whole weekend was a treat, and this is one I want to remember and go back to. The history of the restaurant and well as the history of Mrs Simpson is well worth looking up. Wallis Simpson must have been something in 1930 to have dated the Prince of Wales while she had two divorces behind her, and he abdicated from the throne for her. A true love story!

Wild about Whisky in Dullstroom

Wild about Whisky tasting mat with whisky glasses

We had an unforgettable weekend in Dullstroom this past weekend, thanks to my husband's work. We kicked off the weekend at Wild about Whisky, where we had a choice between whiskies, craft gins, premium brandies, sipping rums and tequilas from all over the world.

We love our whisky and both my husband and I did a whisky tasting. It was a great way to kick of the weekend.

I can't remember what tasting option Hubby choose, but we could taste from one another as well.

Dullstroom is one of the best places for a quick getaway. It is not too far from the city, but there is so much to do on a weekend. We will definitely go back. Watch out for more posts about our weekend. It was the best recharge I had in a really long time.

Glass at whisky tasting
We also experienced Mrs. Simpsons, Anvil Ale Brewery, Dullstroom Inn and Charlie C's. We stayed at Avemore Lodge, which is walking distance from the town centre. It could not have been more perfect.

Which other places is a must-see in Dullstroom?

New Relationships Talk by Michal Snyman

Michal Snyman speech at Kaddy's
#AMamaNeedsToKnow - Michal Snyman
'Israeli born, Michal Snyman, a vibrant mother of three and a successful business owner. She shares her incredible story of starting "over" and finding love again, as well as creating a beautiful blended family.'

I was incredulously listening to Michal Snyman on Thursday night when she told us that she goes to the mirror and says: "I am champion!", "I am beautiful", "I am sexy", "I am the best wife in the world", "I am the best mom in the world", "I am the best daughter in the world", and "I am the best sister in the world". The more she told us of how much she likes herself, and how much she values herself, the more I could resonate to it as well! Yes, she is the most beautiful and sexy and powerful woman I have seen. She is one of the most inspiring people I have met. She is all of that!

Miss Fine's sleep milestone

Miss Fine SnapChat filter
This blog's main purpose has been to record the life and times we have with Miss Fine. I still value coming here and reading all about her milestones, and hope one day she will still be able to come back here as well. We forget so easily. (The Internet is also like a flashing file, and hopefully we will still be able to read it here in future?)

Sleep has not been the most easy since Miss was born. We could never find the off-button, until it finally was off! She can sleep very late every day. But going to sleep, that is the problem...

The Eldest has moved all of her belongings out of her room, and we have been slowly moving Miss Fine into her room. It is a bit bigger, and across from our room. Miss Fine has been enjoying setting up her new room. She has the big Miffy (which I had won at the Kids Living launch), which got set up immediately by Miss Fine. She can switch and dim the light because it is right next to her bed.

Guess what? This week she has gone to bed with a book, and all by herself. It is her decision. We used to take turns to lie next to her until she falls asleep. I know, she's nearly 10. (It took that long.) We are celebrating our "free time" from 8 - 9 pm at night. But it is also sad. The nightly cuddles and talks have come to an end. A milestone has been reached, and an era is gone.

We, the parents, don't know what we want.

Happy sleeping, Miss Fine! I know I am going to miss this.

Sgt. Stubby, An Unlikely Hero - Review

Sgt. Stubby - Un Unlikely Hero - part of poster
Sgt. Stubby is an unexpected movie, with an unexpected hero. The animated movie of the war trials and heroism of a stray dog during the First World War are epic. Especially since it is based on a true story. The dog formed a strong bond with a his master and battalion. He managed to stay with the dough-boys of the 26th "Yankee" Division at the onset of America's involvement in WWI in Europe.

Paperless Post - Review

Paperless Post first screen with envelope and name
Paperless Post card
You've got mail...

We have moved away from invitations through the mail. The recent wedding invitations and Save-the-Date notifications was all done through email and WhatsApp notifications. Our Post Office in South Africa is also not dependable at all! I wish I knew about Paperless Post before this, but NOW I can start planning/designing for the next big event. Miss Fine will be celebrating her 10th and The Man will be celebrating his 50th in a few year's time.

I designed two invitations through Paperless Post in half an hour. There are so many choices to select that it was not even necessary to bring in my own designs or photos. (Which are also options that are allowed)..

I designed the birthday invite for Miss Fine. When you get the card in your inbox, it opens up (moving image of card out of envelope) into a card, with the details, RSVP option and map on the same page. I did some screen prints, but it does not give the full experience. You have to see the options available on the website to appreciate it.
(The birthday details on the cards are only for example purposes)

The 50th invite was designed on a Flyer. It looks like the next BIG THING, as the flyer includes a moving image. It is seriously cool! The link can be shared to email or to Facebook. Great for an event invite!

You also get immediate notifications in your inbox when you preview, and sent the invitations. With each RSVP there is also a notification. There is a "postbox" on the Paperless Post website, which you can view and look at the RSVP's. The flyers can be managed with a link that is sent, and you can also keep track of the invites and RSVP's.

Paperless Post comes at a cost, but it seems you can get very far with the "coins".

This was a very satisfying experience. Everything is in place, and it seems they have thought of everything with the designs. It's nice to tick this off as quickly as possible when planning that next big event.

Watch out for my next invite!

Disclaimer: I was given bonus coins to review this experience.

Netball U/10 D girls - see only backs of team
Netball U/10 D (photo cred: Deb)
Miss Fine's Netball U10/D team of the previous semester was such a great team. They only lost 2 of their games. The most important was the camaraderie they had with the teacher and between themselves. Being part of a sports team is one of the biggest learning experiences our children are exposed to. They learn about life, sportsmanship, team dynamics, friendship and having someone's  back. I hope she will get the same team dynamics next year. In the meantime, I am also going to sign up her team.

May the best teams win!

Why you would want an Instax SQ6 Square

Instax SQ6 flatlay with sunflower
Fujifilm launched their Instax SQUARE SQ6 camera in South Africa last week. It's available in stores and online. We got to play at the launch (see my photos on Instagram), and we got an Instax Mini 9 to take home. The Instax SQ6 Square is still on my Christmas list, because it offers just so much more than the mini. The square size of the prints are a winner!

We all have our photos on our phones, but the printing of an instant memory adds that extra special moment we are able to capture in time. I am thinking of birthday parties, and special events where we want to have that extra reminder. The possibilities with flatlays and special photos for bloggers and content creators are endless...

Flatlay of Instax SQ 6 Square with food
Instax SQ6

  • The Instax SQ6 Square is easy to use.
  • It delivers 1x1 square printing on the spot, within 3 minutes.
  • The 1x1 ratio is popular on social media sites. The square gives it plenty of room to capture the scene.
  • It is stylish and hip to have it and to use it. (Joneses, look out!)
  • It is available in 3 colours: Blush Gold, Graphite Grey and Pearl White.
  • SQ6 includes Automatic Exposure Control. The high-performance flash calculates the surrounding brightness and adjusts shutter speed to capture both the subject and background with clarity. Low light conditions are not a problem.
  • The selfie mirror makes it easy to capture a selfie.
  • Macro mode and landscape mode are available.
  • Group photos are made easier with a built-in timer, as well as a tripod socket.
  • The Double Exposure mode allows to capture an artistic shot with two images in the same print.
  • 3 Flash filters (orange, purple and green) are also available.

Miss Fine loves the Instax Mini 9 (which print a credit card size) already. We have had to set up ground rules with regards taking photos and printing it. I have selected my colour of choice for the Instax SQ6 (take note, Hubby), and it's on top of my Christmas wishlist for 2018.

The Fujifilm Instax retails for a suggested R1999. Fujifilm instax SQUARE film can be purchased in packs of ten or 20, and is now available in not only white but also black frame borders (which looks super cool).

Now I've got an extra item on my monthly budget: Fujifilm Instant Film. (It's not cheap, but we NEED it now *tongue out*)

Brows on fleek at the Brow Bar

The Brow Bar entrance with balloon and flower arrangement - Clearwater
The Brow Bar entrance
My eyebrows is going grey and I can't keep on plucking the grey out. (My way of dealing with it!) I have been colouring it in, but by the end of the day it is gone. We have been walking past the Brow Bar in Clearwater (West Rand, Gauteng, ZA) forever. The Wedding was the perfect occasion to test it out. I sponsored the Eldest, who went to a Brow Bar in Melrose Arch. I tested out The Brow Bar nearer to home, and found that they had moved location to the business park next to the Mall. (That's a plus for me as I hate going into a mall nowadays with the parking fees... It feels like a total barrier having to drive into those huge parking bays, or is it just me?)

Mid-year update - Miss Fine

9-year old Girl in box
Miss Fine had to take a back-step these past few months. It was only wedding stuff and preparations, and the whole budget went into it. The Wedding was the best party ever, and it was all worth it! Miss Fine had a ball of a time. She complained before the wedding that she would not know what to do with herself and that she would be bored. This was not the case. She was a perfect flower-girl, and she enjoyed manning the photo booth with her friends. She also danced the night away! Everybody commented on how confident and big she is.

The 21st of each month used to be my monthly update when she was small. This blog is all about keeping track about how she is growing into the person she has become. I did an update after the first Grade 4 exams, which went very well. We only had feedback from the teacher after the holidays. The teacher said that Miss Fine is her perfect example of kids that really do well, although they are so young for their grade. This validated our decision to put her in Grade 1 when we did. (This is what moms do: Worry about what you do and don't do, and each year we worry AGAIN!) "Phew!"

Marie Stopes South Africa

Marie Stopes South Africa Enhancing Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for women in the community.
It's Women's month in August. We have just celebrated Women's Day last week in South Africa. Miss Fine just asked me last week if Women's Day and Mother's Day are the same. Women's Day in South Africa are celebrated because strong women stood up and marched against injustices. We honour them and we want to be like them. We have come a long way, but there's still so many injustices that needs to be addressed. One of them is giving women equality, dignity and freedom of choice. That's why I love what Marie Stopes South Africa is doing.

The Wedding was the best party ever!

Wedding Couple walking through flower petals after the wedding ceremony
#HnK #JacobsTroue - Patrick Pretorius Photography
Our Wedding of the Year was finally on Wednesday last week. We could not have picked a better day. It was summer in Brits. The Eldest got married to her soul buddy, the same guy she got engaged to a year ago. She still likes him a year later. ;-) They worked hard to accomplish this wedding, but it was all worth it!

Wedded couple close-up shot

As mother of the bride I enjoyed the whole day. There were a few tears, but not much. It was just one big happy party! I shared a few photos on Instagram about the wedding: #JacobsTroue. We were so grateful for everybody who took the time off to celebrate the day with us. I think it was the best wedding ever! Of course! ;-)

All the hard work of making the wedding decorations paid off. The rustic wedding theme looked amazing. I will be sharing some more in later posts.

I am so happy that my daughter is happy! She is having the time of her life!

The wedding couple also entertained us immensely on their wedding day. They danced and danced.
This is from a screenshot from one of their dance creations. That was so clever and entertaining, you two! We are impressed and think you just lifted the bar for upcoming weddings.

All our blessings are with you!
May you have wedded bliss always!

Matsimela Baobab Seed Sugar Scrub sorts Eczema

Matsimela Boabab Seed Scrub and Body Butter
Matsimela Baobab Seed Range
We made a great discovery during the winter. Miss Fine struggles with eczema on her toes. It's always dry, scratchy and breaks open in sores underneath when walking barefoot. Which she loves to do, and mostly can't. The winter is better, because she is wearing shoes, but summer is around the corner again... Miss Fine used my Matsimela Baobab Seed Kalahari Sugar Scrub a while ago, and we haven't looked back!

I am using my Matsimela products very sparingly. It is such a treat that I want to savour it for as long as possible. I only allowed her a little bit of the scrub to use when she asked me one night. We immediately saw the difference. The scrub leaves a lovely oily layer on the skin. The dryness and flakiness are gone on the spot. You don't even need a body cream after that. The fact that the products are natural and  free from harsh chemicals and preservatives, makes it a wonderful product to use for eczema. The baobab seed also has wonderful healing properties, and I think that adds to the wonderful results we got.

We have found the solution to her eczema! Now the Matsimela Baobab Seed Sugar Scrub will be on our monthly list. It's R85.50 in the online shop. That's a score!

Check out Matsimela's Women's Month contribution: By purchasing any Baobab Seed product, R2 will be donated to Miss Earth SA.

Try this, and let me know if you have the same results?

Disclaimer: This is not sponsored. I got the Matsimela Baobab Seed Scrub in a blogger meetup, but bought the Matsimela Baobab Body Butter myself.

We have one week left, before our Eldest move out of the house. The Wedding is near. I am going to be M.O.B. The excitement levels are exponentially increasing. There is nothing like a wedding. We can't wait!

I am so glad everything worked out in the end. We did not know how we could afford a wedding, but somehow it all came together. This has been a very tough year. With lots of luck, blessings from friends and crafts all is ready to go. The Eldest is counting down each day. My sister and her husband is already here from London to celebrate their big day.

I feel a bit sad that the Eldest is moving out of the house. Permanently. This is the last week she is going to be around. The last week that we are going to ask, Are you eating here tonight? It is going to be strange to not have her around. I am sad. She is such a lovely person to have around. We will definitely miss her, and Miss Fine especially. She loved to have her around in the evenings. Even the dog stands in front of her door and cry in the evenings when she is not at home.

We are going to miss you! But we are so glad you found your special partner to share your life with! That is the best any parent could wish for their children. I know we will always be your parents, and we will always be involved with your life. You will happily drive off in the sunset, but life will unfold to the next chapter.

We will be here!

How to get rid of the winter blues - Nestle scalloped potatoes

Nestlé Winter Warming package
The winter has us slumped and hibernating. I definitely suffer from the winter blues. I know there's things I should be doing better. But all I can do is sit under a blanket or hide under my covers. I am in awe of people continuing with their exercise programs and eating salad. Who are you? How do you do it?

Nestlé sent us the Winter Warming package, with tips on how to shake the winter blues. All the things that helps cope with the cold of the winter. Thanks, Nestlé! From now on I will make sure to have the Nestlé Evaporated Milk on my monthly shopping list. It gives so much flavour to a dish.

Nestlé's 7 point plan to shake off the winter blues

Naazneen Sali-Ameen, Nutrition, Health and Wellness Manager at Nestlé South Africa, has drawn up the following great solutions to help keep you on track when it comes to winter eating and exercise habits. (By now we know these things. Or we should.) But it helps to hear it again.

1.    Create simple ‘one pot’ meals.

Remember that for each main meal you should aim to have ½ plate veg, ¼ plate protein and ¼ plate starch/grains.

A recipe for Indian Butter Chicken, using the Nestlé Ideal Evaporated Milk, was included. As I am vegetarian, and it is Meatless Monday, I searched for a vegetarian meal. I used our Nestlé Evaporated Milk with a Scalloped Potato Dish. Great for winter warmth. See recipe below.

2.    Don’t overindulge.

The cold weather often brings out the craving for comforting, starchy foods. You can still enjoy these nutritious dishes by being mindful of your eating habits and appropriate serving sizes. Eat slowly and make mealtimes an occasion, eating in front of a TV or while sitting in front of your computer can easily distract you and cause you to overeat.

3.    Create alternatives to your favourite take-outs.

The budget also does not allow take-outs, so we dó make our own. Vegetarian hamburgers with mushrooms, and home-made burger patties from mince is much more tasty in any case. Pizza making at home is also a great idea.

4.    Keep hydrated.

We just had an issue with Miss Fine who does not drink enough fluids in winter. We were at the doctor on Friday with severe stomach ache which turned out to be constipation. Now we have to remind her to keep up the fluids. Herbal teas, Milo or Hot Chocolate and fresh juices helps. A lot!

5.    Enjoy the outdoors.

The days are very mild here in winter. We should be out more to enjoy the sunshine, get more Vitamin D, and be more active.

6.    Move more to keep warm.

Move what makes you happy! Miss Fine loves to play with a ball. We also love walking the dog. (We should just do it more often!)

Oscar Gutierrez - ICONIC #MandelaDay

Upstairs @ Bamboo - ICONIC exhibition
Oscar Gutierrez, a southern African photographer, hold his ICONIC exhibition recently. It was supposed to run until today to coincide with the birthday month of Nelson Mandela. (Not sure if it did?) Gutierrez, who has captured the history and the moments of this region, has delved into his extensive archives. I am definitely not qualified to share photos of photos, but for an archivist like me, it is solid gold to see the legacy of history and icons captured here.

It's Nelson Mandela Day today. We are all trying to live his legacy by donating 67 minutes of our time to a good deed. The 67 minutes is the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent for the greater good. 27 of those years were spent in jail.

George Bizos was the keynote speaker at the opening reception of ICONIC. 5% of the proceeds are donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The following is the Artist Statement: Oscar Gutierrez:

As a photographer, I live the tension of capturing movement and depth with an image, while working with the limitations of the situation I reflect. For example, flash was not possible when photographic Mandela. I do appreciate portraits, but I generally want to bring in context. I want to give viewers a glimpse into a time and place; show them the moment, but also the pasts and futures of my subjects. Capturing these iconic moments was a way of keeping alive the memories of those leaders who are no longer with us. Madiba's centenary month seemed to be the right time to recollect those moments.

It was truly an experience to see this photographic exhibition. Upstairs @ Bamboo is a great space to give a magical reflection to the Icon. I understand that some of these photos will be used in a book being written by George Bizos.

Disclaimer: I was invited to the opening, but not asked/paid to write this.
