Check: vacation done!

We had a lovely week at the South Coast in Uvongo.

Of course the week went by in a flash! We were looking forward to it for such a long time, and we tried to fit in as much as possible each day.

The weather was cloudy for most of the time, but we actually preferred it to the blazing hot sun. The family could still swim and we spent most of the days on the beach.

The family swimming
(There was no day it was hot enough for me to swim...)
It was the first time since I was very small that we explored this part of the South Coast. It is such a lovely place. We explored Uvongo, Ramsgate and St Michael's.
I can easily spent all my days here...

Little Miss loves the ocean! She spent most of the time very near to her Dad and directed him up and down and in and out of the waves.

It was bliss!! Just tooooo short!

----

Today we are back into the grind again for the next two weeks before Christmas.
This is going to be difficult easy! Deep breaths!

Enjoy your holidays!
I am envious of those of you going now on your holidays! Where are you staying?

Lazy days of summer

Halftone 2

We are enjoying thus summer at home! We had an early vacation in the bush in the beginning of December. Now we are totally lazy getting the much needed rest at home!

This year I welcome it. The previous years I felt a bit depressed staying at home over the festive period, but it has been so relaxing to sleep late each day and just chill.

We also love spending time with family and friends!

And deciding on a whim each day to do some of the fun stuff here in Johannesburg...

We went on a drive to Maropeng today, but landed in a loop on the Kromdraai road. (I can see my dad and sister shaking their heads, because they have excellent direction, but even my iPad maps took us to the wrong place!)

It felt like a drive in the countryside and we did not mind. We will definitely go to Maropeng this coming week!

We took a detour to a fabourite place, Maggie's Farm, and of course had pies for lunch.

The pIcture is created by the Halftone 2 app, a comic book creator. It is the free gift available to download today from the 12 Days of Gifts.

The 12 Days of Gifts from the iTunes store are great fun. There is a free fun app or music or game to download from iTunes each day. This is happening from the 26th of December until 6th January. It is definitely worth downloading!

Back from a week in the bush

We just came back from a week in the bush, feeling refreshed and chilled out!

We had very little signal in the bush, and we came back to no Telkom ADSL. It is very frustrating, but it also helped to switch off.

It was great to breathe in a bit of fresh air, and watched the sunsets!

Little Missy loved the game drives! We were a bit concerned, but I remembered how the eldest loved it. The little ones are mesmerized about all the animals, and even little things like chameleons.

We had a great encounter with the elephants on
a morning drive

The absolute highlight of our week:
A walk with rhinos - we got pretty near to them
Breathed in all the sunsets!
(Something we miss here in the city)
Lots of dives into the pool
It was a great vacation!

Why did it feel so short?

See you on the next plane!

My travel vision board

I have a vision board on my computer about the places I want to go. It has been there since the start of 2012. It is mostly local South African places, not even overseas destinations…
(Maybe that is the problem?)

In my future vision I am going to Mozambique to swim with the dolphins.

I am going to Cape Town to eat fish at the Waterfront and at all the Bays. I am going to travel on all the wine routes, and taste wine and champagne and wine and champagne. (I have done a little bit of it, but it is something to do on a regular basis! Tick!)

I am going to the Drakensberg Mountains, and climb a few of those chain ladders again. (I have done it before. Tick!)

I am going to spend lazy afternoons on the beach at the Dolphin Coast in Kwazulu-Natal. (I have been there, this year at Umdloti, but it is still one of my favourite local destinations for a great family holiday! Tick!)

Up until now I have been doing vicarious travels to overseas destinations through the pages of books. And magazines. And blogs. And Facebook.
I have been sharing in the glorious travels of family and friends.
I have been soaking in the sun from pages glaring from destinations from white beaches and aquamarine water and mountains touching the clouds and open bush spaces littered with roaming wild life, and bustling skyscrapers and churches and castles bursting with history.

But I haven’t been there myself…

I wish that I could say that it is enough to have quelled my travel-lust, but of course we all know that it does not work like that!
Instead it fuels the desire to board the next plane to an exotic destination with an exotic name that needs to be Googled when you hear it first!
I want to go “there”!

I realize I desperately need to upgrade my vision board, and what a better way than to start today with this kick-in-the butt inspiration from the Travelstart Blogger Experience Contest being run.

Thumbs!
See you on the next plane!

Creative and fun ways to get your kids up and active

I was sent this guest post by Ivy Delfin, because I posted a trampoline photo.

I was intrigued by the videos of "exercise heaven" (my phrase) after I looked at some of the videos about BounceInc.

Why don't somebody bring this to South Africa?

For kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have gym class at school, during recess, at dance class or soccer practice, while riding bikes, or when playing tag. But once they’re at home and on holidays, it can be difficult to get them to leave the couch when video games are enticing.

Active kids enjoy a range of health benefits such as stronger muscles and bones, less chance of becoming overweight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and a better, healthier outlook on life. There are 4 different types of exercise that kids should focus on. Aerobic activity gets their heart pumping and lungs working harder, it also releases those feel good chemicals! Muscle strengthening obvious works the muscles and gets them working a little harder. Bone strengthening exercises like jumping helps them grow and keep them strong. Finally, stretches make their muscles more flexible, helping them reach and bend and turn better, it also helps to avoid injury. It is important to encourage your kids to get up and get active to keep them healthy and fit, and it feeds their natural curiosity of the world but being out and about.

There are a bunch of ways you can encourage your kids to get active, if they are reluctant you will have to make the activity seem particularly exciting. Play hopscotch with them or practice skip rope. Involve yourself in the activity so they know that they have your full support and attention. You could take them for a day trip out to an area where you can do a light hike together and explore nature, teaching them about the forest at the same time. Have a dance party in their room, fairy lights are affordable and easy to come by and make a great DIY disco. Don’t be afraid to embarrass yourself, they will be glad that you are involved and taking the time to play with them. Get them to put on their favourite songs and get the lights flashing, dancing is a great fun way to get active without even knowing it!

During the holidays especially there are often organizations that offer activities that your children and family can enjoy. One place that is open all year round is BOUNCEinc, they offer a series of trampolines where your kids can jump and play for hours in a fun and safe environment. Jumping is an excellent form or exercise, and something that kids are often very good at but often don’t realize it’s helping them keep fit.

Play is a really important component of a child’s life, so incorporating as much active play as possible is going to positively impact their outlook on life and create long lasting happy memories.

Reflection on a holiday

This past week has been an absolute breather, and we skipped some of the winter chill in Gauteng.

I have decided again that I want to stay in Umdloti, forever!, but here we are back to start the hectic race again tomorrow... (Sad face!)

Our Little Missy had her best holiday yet! Before she was not impressed with the sand and the sea, and she wanted to stay in her dad's arms.
This year she loved it. Much, much more... (Although Dad had his share in having to stay very close!)

She got a roll the first day, and with high tide she was still watching the waves coming in...
But for the rest she had no stop on her!
She wanted to swim, and play on the beach, and play with the Frisbee, and build sand castles, and walk on the rocks, and watch the little creatures of the rock pools...

We went to the harbour as well, and got a ride in the Durban Harbour among the huge cargo ships.
I was very impressed that we could go the Wilson's Wharf and find a boat for a ride on a Thursday! Definitely a place to go!

Afterwards the Little One told us that she found it a bit boring... I think she felt a little bit sea sick because she was looking too much at the waves. But we loved the half hour ride, which seems more than enough to get enough photos, and getting some important information about the size of those cargo ships! (We had a very talkative captain...)
The ships are BIG up close!

I definitely want to go again. There's Ballito, and Umhlanga to explore some more. Not that there's not enough to do in Umdloti...

There's Cafe Java for lovely breakfasts and wraps, and The Bush Tavern for great seafood and Bush Bunnies. We still need to check out the other restaurants. Not enough money time!

The Galley in Ballito

We love The Galley in Ballito, with its view and it's food!
We went there twice during the holiday.

I love a sea holiday!

What are your most favorite holiday destination?

Travel Bag checklist - when travelling with little ones

I got this following checklist in my inbox, which I think is worth checking off just before going on on that much much much needed break.

After our accident on the highway on Saturday, I am crossing fingers and toes, hoping that we will still be able to go on that upcoming break. Our car doesn't look that bad, but we are not sure at this stage...

Sister Lilian suggests the following essentials for your travel bag for car and plane travels:

  • A bag of special little toys that are only used in the car. Make sure the same toy is not given on each journey
  • Music that soothes both little ones and their parents
  • Mobiles dangled from the roof of the car
  • A bunch of keys and a magnet are very useful for fascinating older babies endlessly
  • Older children respond well to recorded stories
  •  A change of clothes for inevitable spills and leaks
  • Pampers® nappies and wipes (Luckily this one is not on my list anymore)
  • Bottles and a non-spill cup
  • A security item from home like a blanket (also for warmth as flights can be very cold)
  • Rubbish bags
  • Baby food utensils and cups
  • Toys that baby hasn’t seen before
  • A jacket and cap for small babies
  • Healthy snacks like dried or fresh fruit
  • A dummy for those who make use of one

Tips for a safe road trip, via the AA

This is the way every parent wants to travel. With a sleeping toddler in the back.
But it most definitely does not pan out this way... Even if we keep our fingers crossed!

I am also of the opinion that a holiday at home does not feel like a holiday. I believe that we sometimes have to get away to blow off steam and rest completely!

I like the press release by the Automobile Association of South Africa with handy tips for travelling with the family.

Are we there yet?
Keeping a focus on both safety and sanity on your family road trips

For families getting away on that much needed holiday, the road trip looms large as a key challenge, often preventing you from both starting and ending the break on a high note. For parents, the stress of making all the arrangements, packing the car, getting the kids out the door and hopefully getting ahead of the traffic means that many are exhausted before even starting the car.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has compiled a list of tips that will not only ensure you leave the house feeling more prepared and relaxed, but will also make your journey safer and more enjoyable for your children, helping you get the holiday started off on the right foot.

Before the trip:

1.     Plan the length of your trip. Be honest about what you and your children can handle in the way of a road trip. While older children might be able to deal with 10 or more hours in the car, younger children can’t. Generally speaking, young children should not be subjected to confinement in a car for more than six hours a day. This is just as much for your sanity as it is for theirs.
2.     Children are prone to car or motion sickness so be prepared for this. Consult your doctor or pharmacist ahead of time and get the right medication according to age and weight. Most of these will need to be administered prior to departure.
3.     To avoid frustration, confusion and last minute run-around on departure day, start packing a few days before you leave. Discuss with your children what they want to take with and if they are old enough let them pack their own bags; with some guidance of course.
4.     Get your car packed and ready the night before if you are planning to leave early in the morning. This includes getting snacks, drinks, a spare set of clothing, first aid kit and other essentials prepared. Toys, books and other key things to keep your child occupied should be stored in the car where it is easy for them to reach whilst not causing any safety concerns. Make sure the DVD player is charged and the screen set up where it won’t distract the driver – and remember to ensure the screen is securely fastened so that it won’t fall down and cause injury.
5.     Make sure your home is secured and you have made the necessary arrangements to ensure you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Keeping your precious cargo safe:

1.     Ensure everyone in the car is safely secured. South African law states that all vehicle passengers should wear a seatbelt at all times and the onus is on the driver to ensure it happens.
·       A baby should be in an approved and preferably rear-facing child seat.
·       Older children (15-25kgs) should be secured in a booster seat with a seatbelt on, preferably in the rear of the vehicle.
·       Never place a child seat in the front seat of a vehicle equipped with airbags unless they have been deactivated.
·       Small children (less than 20kg) should not sit in the front passenger seat if the vehicle has a front passenger airbag that has not been deactivated.
2.     Never allow children to stand on seats or sit on other passengers’ laps.
3.     Ensure doors are locked and activate the child locks on rear doors to avoid children opening them while the vehicle is moving or in unsafe places.
4.     Make sure your baby is not exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time while in the vehicle –block the sun with a towel or shade screen.
5.     Never leave your baby, or pets, unattended in a vehicle - temperatures can easily reach over 40 degrees celsius within a very short period of time, and this can cause heat exhaustion and even prove fatal.
6.     When parking, make sure you have good access to the side of the vehicle that your child’s seat is fitted on.
7.     The trip home after the holiday has ended is always the least enjoyable part. Ensure not to rush home as this will put you and your family at risk. To ensure your safety all the way home, rather treat the trip home as part of your holiday – so keep your speed down and enjoy the scenery.
8.     For peace of mind, keep your AA Membership card and AA Emergency Call Centre number at hand 0861 000 234.

Keeping boredom at bay:

1.     Take regular breaks. Make sure to stop every one and a half to two hours or every 200km to give yourself a break and also give children the opportunity to run around and burn off energy. There are great child-friendly rest stops along all major routes that cater for both yours and your child’s needs.
2.     A great way to avoid the inevitable question - are we there yet? -  is to give children a map, or, even more fun, help them create their own before your leave. You can trace the route together and point out interesting landmarks so that they will have a sense of where they are going.
3.     Those ‘old school’ games of ‘I Spy’ and ‘Car cricket’ are great ways to keep children occupied and entertained on long trips. Use these along with sing-along-songs and CD stories to keep children entertained and create family traditions along the way.

Of all the above, the most important tip is to keep your sense of humour and wits about you. A long trip need not be stressful and can be a great opportunity for the whole family to reconnect and talk about plans for the upcoming holiday!

Enjoy your road trip!

You know it is near the end of the year...

when...

- The Student is back home, finished with writing her exams. I am exhaling with her! It has been a tough year!

- The Toddler is busy with assessments at pre-primary, and not so keen going every day.

- The concert is done and dusted.

- The ballet concert is a few movie clips on my phone!

- The tiny gymnastics end-of-year is happening on Saturday.

- We are seeing Christmas decorations everywhere, but I think I will leave our own Christmas decorations for December. (It feels like it has been put up very early this year?)

- We are all beginning to look forward to the holidays, especially since we now have our own holiday to look forward to. I usually feel that holidays at home does not feel like holidays.

- I have compiled my list: What I want for Christmas. It is the first time I had drawn up a list so far in advance, thanks to Blogger Secret Santa by Stiletto Mum.

- I am beginning to contemplate my goals for next year. One of the main goals is looking at studying again. A lecturer told me to contemplate doing a longitudal study with my Masters that I did not finish. As I hate not completing it, it is something really worth considering!

- It is great weather for swimming here! (Sorry, Northern Hemisphere!)

I love this time of the year!

What are you planning for December?

Do you also like this time of the year?

Crocodile Creek visit

We saw a sign next to the road for the reptile park, and went in search for Crocodile Creek near Ballito in the Tongaat River flood plain in Kwazulu-Natal.

Hubby nearly turned around because the roads are a bit tricky in that area, but some road signs beckoned us on with "You are nearly there!"

Crocodile Creek houses 7000 Nile crocodiles, also alligators, slender snouted and dwarf crocodiles. The eldest is a 70 year old Nile crocodile which weighs 600 kilograms which is still being used in their breeding programme.

We had a very enthusiastic guide who climbed into the cages and even went and picked this one out of the water.

The Toddler could touch a smallish crocodile (even hold it, but that she refused), and she thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the crocodiles and paraphernelia.

After that we had crocodile sosaties for lunch. It tastes something like chicken... Not bad at all!

Next time you see that road sign when you are on the North Coast. Take the exit! It is well worth the trip!

Movie Clip Monday #26 - Toddler and the waves. Finally!

Yes, we did it!
By the end of the holidays the Toddler had her feet in the waves.

(Sorry about the sound quality. There was a strong wind blowing on the beach.)

Sleep sorted! Really?

Three years and 7 months. You would think that sleep is not that much of an issue anymore. That sleep should be sorted by now...

Surprise, surprise!

Sleep is a total different ball-game for a three year old...

Maybe she has got our late night owl genes, or she's just a normal three year old?

The most recent phase is one where she goes to sleep in our arms. Demanding literally to sleep in the nooks of our arms... And also when waking up. Which can be a couple of times a night!

Getting her to bed at an acceptable time and getting her up a the break of a day. Not so easy...

Which means that she spends most of her sleeping time in our bed. Also no surprise, and I am not complaining!

There is nothing as sweet as waking up into that sweet face in the mornings...

We had a break from reality for a week. With sleep routines going for a dive!

But she went down even before her normal bed-time tonight! (Definitely something to do with that skipped afternoon nap...)

Fingers crossed for a good night's sleep before we check back into the rat race!

Happy sleeping!

The Toddler and the sea

Two years ago we had a toddler who was not impressed with the sand and the sea...

We now have a toddler who plays in the sand on the beach, but she still do not want to go near the ocean.

Only when safely in the arms of her dad!

It is an improvement, at least!

We hear it is extremely cold in Gauteng, so we are very pleased to be here.

There is a mean wind blowing here, but it still is not the icy cold of the weather that we have left behind...
