Isabella's - I will be back for the cappuccinos

Isabella's
I was invited to a Kitchen Tea at Isabella's Cake & Food Shop in Waterkloof a while back. It was the first time I noticed these stores. I love the interior of the stores.

We did a lunch at the Isabella's in Northcliff on Friday as well, and it was an experience. I can recommend the toasted bagel with crumbed chicken and my friend had one of their lovely quiches with a salad. That was more than enough food...

But... I am not impressed with the High Tea packages on offer. The "Mad Hatter's party" was beautifully presented, but I was feeling that we could have gotten more for what we had to pay.
For R140 I was expecting a buffet, and we only got: (Copying and pasting from the menu)
"Strawberry Spritzer
Coronation Prawn & Cucumber Sandwich
Mad Hatter Cupcake
Mini Quiche per person
Mini Salmon & Cucumber Bruschetta, topped with Wasabi Mayo & Caviar
Scone with Strawberry Jam & Cream
Glass of Bubbly"

Luckily the Bride-to-Be loved it, and that's all that matters!

I will definitely be back for their cappuccinos! They are great!
(That's my standard of excellence! If they make a great cappuccino, they make it in my book!)

And they have a great children's menu that we have to try out as well...

Going blind for the blind

I noticed a few things about being blind...
It was at a fundraising event for Egoli Blind, called Dinner in the Dark, on Friday evening.

We were blindfolded and had to eat our "dinner in the dark"!

Thoughts on being blind:

- I don't like being blind! (That's the point!)

- I get sleepy as soon as my eyes are not working.

- Conversation was hampered because I could not see the rest of the people at the table.

- Food tastes different when you can't see it.

- It was a whole negotiation to get my glass filled, and we did not know how to get the attention of the waiters. Keeping our hands in the air did not seem to work.

In the end there was a little lot of peeking happening, and we had great fun!

It made me aware of how difficult it must be to be in perpetual darkness, and to negotiate your way in a visual world.

I work with a blind colleague, and he makes it seem so easy!
He does not see anything as a barrier.
When something has to be done, he is off with only his walking cane in his hand!

Hats off to all the blind people who "see" and do everything!

I am copying the Mission of Egoli Blind, who are mainly operating in the southern Gauteng area of South Africa. They are on Facebook as well: Egoli Blind.

"In order to achieve its vision Egoli Blind provides the following to its members as well as the visually impaired community within its area of operation:
o Support to recently blinded people;o Assistance to visually impaired people with reference to job placement and the improvement of working conditions.o Advise people of and refer where necessary to rehabilitation facilities.o The collection and dissemination of information relevant to visually impaired people.o  Creating awareness among visually impaired people of the services provided by Blind SA i.e.:
  •  Braille training;
  •  Literature;
  •  Study bursaries;
  •  Loan facilities;
  •  Education;
  •   Employment and careers;
  •   Advocacy;
  •  Blindness-related information;
o Orientation and mobility;
  • Support to parents of visually impaired children ‘and’ visually impaired learners relating to educational matters;
  • Support to visually impaired senior citizens;
  • A forum for networking among visually impaired people;
  • Creating an awareness among the sighted public of blind people and blindness-related matters"

The Dress!

The final year matric dance dress seems to be quite a big deal! No, it is one of the focus points of this year!

It does not matter that it is only taking place at the end of September this year! No, it is a matter-of-urgency!

Since The Teen returned from her overseas tour it has been a constant discussion point. I had a “very urgent” talk very soon thereafter. “Should we not consider having this Dress made?” Only the choice of university (which is another story altogether) seems to be taking up some of her head space!

I think I am going to have to exercise some amount of patience / understanding / negotiating skills this year! I have given The Teen a budget with regards the Dress, but it seems her choice of Dress exceeds that budget. (I am not going to budge… I am not going to budge…) It is far more expensive than I would spend on any ball gown!

I have given The Speech: This is only one function! You are going to have to attend lots and lots of functions in years to come! You look extremely pretty in a very simple elegant design. So much more pretty than an elaborate Ball Gown! She agrees about the simple and elegant… (phew!)

I spent yesterday afternoon at two shops in the Mall where I think we are paying off that hefty rent bill a month. The dresses far far exceed our prize range… And it did not help that she found a near perfect dress! Luckily she agreed it was not a “Wow! Dress” (wipe sweat from brow)…

Any suggestions on how to not go crazy in searching for that perfect dress? I am Mrs Plain and Mrs Cheap (if I can get away with it!). I always believe it is not the most expensive that looks the most beautiful!

Invitation to prepare your own meal at the End-of-Year function

Last night I felt like The Outsider. We were invited to Dries’ end-of-year function to “test our culinary skills.” Dries forwarded the invite to me only yesterday, although he had it for a week already. He knows I would have been bitching about it for a week if I had known earlier. To prepare food is not my favourite activity. It is my least favourite activity of all! (There, I have said it! Sound of sirens! Waiting for the bombs to drop…).

To prepare my own food at an end-of-year function feels like absolute hell to me!
I want to be wined and dined and to feel I am in for a treat!
But there I was with all the happy people (happy to be invited to make your own food?) around me, and thinking that I am definitely from another planet to be the only one swearing on the inside. Apparently also on the outside, because Dries told me later to stop swearing.
Luckily there was red wine! The ultimate lifesaver! After three wines it went really well, and I was opening the phyllo pastry packet for the apple strudel and pecan nut phyllo pie with gusto. I don’t know if it was the red wine, or if the chef saw my clumsiness with regards to food, but he helped me with stacking the phyllo layers, and folding it. Amazing, between me and Dries we made the brinjal starter and the apple and pecan nut strudel desert!

I must congratulate Angela Day Kitchen at Lifestyle. Even me, an absolute stick-in-the-mud enjoyed it, and the food was all-round excellent! Luckily Dries also works for very very nice people, and with their partners we had a lovely time!

BUT I still don’t like making my own food at an end-of-year-function!!
