Mrs Simpson's should be on your Dullstroom list

Portrait of Mrs Simpson inside restaurant with handbags and shoes
Wallis Simpson, the late Duchess of Windsor
We had the most amazing weekend getaway in Dullstroom two weeks back. One of the places that really deserves a mention, is Mrs Simpson's. I would not have given it a second look driving past there, but you have to go in to experience the ambiance, the people and the great food.

We started off our Friday evening at Wild about Whisky, and after that we went to Mrs. Simpson's. The whole weekend was a treat, and this is one I want to remember and go back to. The history of the restaurant and well as the history of Mrs Simpson is well worth looking up. Wallis Simpson must have been something in 1930 to have dated the Prince of Wales while she had two divorces behind her, and he abdicated from the throne for her. A true love story!

Kitchen Tea at Urban Angel Café

Kitchen Tea celebrations at Urban Angel Café
Kitchen Tea - Urban Angel Café
The Eldest who is getting married in less than a month, had her Kitchen Tea this past weekend. She was able to guess that her Kitchen Tea would be on the same day her soon-to-be-husband had his bachelors'. It wasn't a surprise, but it also was. She had great bridesmaids who sorted everything, and made the day very special to her. The future mother-in-law also had a hand. She is very lucky to have these people in her life. She enjoyed it so much, and she got everything she wants for her future home. A Mr Price gift registry worked it's charm.

Urban Angel Café is a firm favourite with their quality food, good vibes and great service. That was a great choice for the venue. Their cake was divine! See below! Everybody also ordered their own food, from breakfasts to sandwiches to nachos. We all loved it!

Here's some random photos from the day.

Sprout Café gets a shout-out for health and great taste - Review

Exterior Sprout Café and Salad Bar
Sprout Café and Salad Bar
Sprout Café re-launched this past weekend. When I hear healthy and vegan, I usually don't need an extra prompt to get me there. It is very difficult to find restaurants that cater for vegetarians, and I love to try out interesting food. The whole family enjoyed our outing to Sprout in the Stoneridge Centre in Edenvale on Saturday. I grew up in the East Rand, and love seeing how my previous Valley is expanding. (How beautiful is Stoneridge Centre? You have to go!)

As I usually do a Wordless Wednesday, this is a perfect opportunity to share some of my photos of Saturday's outing.

14th Anniversary - we are still having fun together

Note with text "Love you to the moon and back" on David Tlale stationery
"Love You to the Moon and Back"
Thank you, dear Hubby! There is nothing like an anniversary of taking stock of your relationship and of what is important. We celebrated our 14th yesterday. It really goes by too quick (*sic*). Life feels a bit harsh at this moment, but we can still go home to each other and our home, and slay life from our protective family nest.

WE are still having fun together (check the Instagram photos), and laughing together!

Found a spot with a view and vibe

The Windjammer
We are always in search of a view here in the city! Somewhere to catch the last rays of the sun and being able to look towards a horizon and not into the rows of brick walls!

We found that on Friday night while I was scrolling through Zomato looking for a place we have not visited before. The Windjammer Restaurant and Upperdeck Bar in Honeydew is such a spot!

We got seats on the deck with a great view. There was also live music that was not bad at all. In fact, it was excellent!! A few of the Sting songs really got us going. We left early, because CHILD, but apparently they were waiting for the main entertainment at 9 pm. (Date night spot, definitely!)

The food was just as great! I wrote a review on Zomato. Little Miss loved her squid starter, I had the Mediterranean pasta and Hubby the huge double burger!

We will be back to get more of this view, vibe and food!

There were a number of children with their parents at the venue. Next time I will ensure that I bring earplugs on a weekend as the music was extremely loud.
(I don't think it is good for young ears to be exposed to this for too long!)

What spots can you recommend for their views?

Feeding the elephants at Glen Afric

We have been looking forward to do this for quite a while. It is only on Sundays that they bring out the elephants at Glen Afric.

Hubby is celebrating his birthday this week, and we treated him with a Sunday buffet AND the elephants.
It was a treat for everybody! Little Missy loved it!

A cool down in the pool afterwards
It was a lovely Sunday!

Hope you had a great day as well?

Photo report of the weekend

Decorating in the boardroom
We had such a quiet and uneventful weekend...

I started with two functions on Friday, but by six thirty we were home.
We had a weekend of rest and time with the family!

Some more of these kinds of weekends, please!!

Tiny Tumbles exercises

Left-right...
We also had two breakfasts; on Saturday and Sunday.
My ultimate guilty pleasure!
Moroccan Lifestyle - one of our favs

We also went to check out Lemon Rose Farm, which we always drive by and say we should stop there one day...

We loved the garden restaurant area and the farm yard with the animals. Mostly because the Toddler assured us it is the "Zoo"while she thoroughly the animals and the play area. The chickens and ducks were walking between the tables.

But the food was not that exciting... Here you definitely go for the children!

Feeding the ducks at Rusty Hook

One of my happy childhood memories is feeding the ducks with my parents and grandparents at Florida Lake.

The excitement of a Sunday afternoon of collecting all the leftover bread and going for a ride to the lake...

Throwing bread crumbs to all the ducks that come swimming when they see that we have food...

That was fun!

Unfortunately Florida Lake is not a place that we want to go to any more. It feels unsafe, and the area has not been maintained. I do not know if there are still ducks in the area?

We found a place nearby which feels like getting a bit of nature, as well as giving the Toddler the opportunity to feed the ducks! At Rusty Hook.

I was a bit apprehensive that it would be "rusty", but it is a great restaurant and function venue in beautiful natural surroundings .

We will be back!

What childhood memories do you have of feeding the ducks?

7 years

It’s been seven years since the day we got married. 1 May has been a very good choice. We’ve got Worker’s Day each year, a public holiday to celebrate our special day!

Thank you, Hubby, it has been a good seven years! It has flown by much too quickly! (Time flies when... Yes, that! Big smile!)

We are having so much fun!

The Teen reminded us that in other countries we get the opportunity to renew our vows. And of course, we all know about the seven-year-itch! Seven seems to be a good number to have reached!
Some fun!
Hubby gave me chocolate and flowers, and I had to make good with breakfast at Second Cup. I nearly forgot because I lost track of the days... I blame the vacation! I thought I still had until Monday!

Cherry on Top Coffee Shop

I was invited to a breakfast at a lovely place on Saturday morning: Cherry on Top. It is situated in suburban Kenmare, on the West Rand, in Krugersdorp. The photos tell some of the story.  A house and gardens have been transformed into a picturesque setting for a memorable meeting place with friends and family.

We had egg-and-bacon baskets, which look like beautiful arrangements, and afterwards we had mouth-watering cake! I can only attest for these two items on the menu... It is divine!

It is a great place to take the little ones.

There are so many great places on our side of the world... I am going back to look at the menu again!

Toddler meltdown in a public place

We had an incident of toddler meltdown at a restaurant over the weekend. The Tantrum reared its ugly head when the Toddler wanted to hold a glass of ice; not happy with one ice cube only!

We tried to divert her attention, and made a few jokes. Luckily it did not last for too long.

When I looked at the photos again, I saw the bothered faces in the background.  Not impressed at all!

Doppio Zero, a nice place to take the toddler

Doppio Zero, Bell Air Mall in Nothriding
Strange how our choice of restaurants have changed with the Toddler. Our main focus is on going to a place where there is a play area for the Toddler as well!

We have find a new favourite place. The play area is a definite winner. And best of all: We can sit next to the play area, and enjoy a wonderful meal. Because the food is excellent at Doppio Zero! I have commented in a previous post about how much I like the restaurant.

What I also like is the way the play area is enclosed, and the play equipment is for babies and smaller children. I saw a note up that they also do parties for children. (Make a note!) It is just a bummer to see how the Mall has lost business because of bad management. Still a lovely place, but a lot of the shops had to close its doors...

The Toddler had a ball tonight.
