This Dad rocks it!

I had a breakfast date on Saturday, and Hubby took the Toddler with him for breakfast.
(Something I suspect he is quite keen to do, because he gets a lot of attention when he is alone with her.)

He had just ordered the drinks when there was an announcement that the Toddler had an accident in her pants. The stomach bug kind of accident...

Hubby was not fazed at all, but made a makeshift plan with the panties in the toilets. He's not one of those dads who you will find gagging...

They had to hurry along with breakfast, but after a second "explosion" it was time to go...

I found them at home in a good routine of extra panties, and wet wipes (toilet paper is too harsh, apparently!), and glasses of water and cool drinks standing around to keep the hydration up.

And that is how the rest of our weekend went!

We could at least do a breakfast (photo at D'Ouwe Werf in Broadacres) on Sunday and laze around because she did not feel unwell...

Luckily she clutched out at six last night, and this morning she was all well again.

This is the second weekend that has gone by with some sort of bug pestering us!

How was you weekend?

Worth more dead than alive

We usually joke and say that we are worth more dead than alive. But it is not true!
Hubby is far more valuable to me, even if we count it down to Rands and cents...

The previous week I was reminded again of the painful loss of a partner when Lori at Random Ramblings of a Stay at Home Mom lost her husband. Read Speak, her eulogy to her husband at his funeral. Haunting stuff!

Reasons why Hubby is worth more alive than dead:
  • Although I complain about the snoring (wink smile), I cannot imagine not sleeping next to him each night. He makes me feel safe and secure. The rest of the family feel out of zinc when he is not around, especially at night! (“Where’s the Daddy?” gets heard quite often when he’s not around.)
  • He works! Every day! (Major deal breaker!)
  • He prepares breakfast, and lunches, and dinner! It is quality food as well! (I am soooo lucky, I know!)
  • Hubby is a handyman as well! He fixes things; and it looks as good as the original. He also cleans up after he has done a DIY job!
  • He is a great friend to have around! Make any suggestion of an outing or “adventure” and he is there!  And he enjoys it as well!
  • Hubby is a great father! He changes nappies, makes bottles in the middle of the night and he drives the teenager around!
  • Hubby goes camping and hiking with me. We are planning our next hike in the Drakensberg Mountains for this year.
  • He drinks and enjoys red wine with me!
  • He loves going out for breakfasts with us (my favourite pastime).
  • He makes time for us, and usually makes sure that he is at home when we are home.  He sometimes says no to after-work drinks with the guys...
  • He gives me space to be me, and to do what I want to do!
Definitely, he is not worth more dead than alive! I am “rich” because of him in our lives! Corny! Sorry!

Lori, I am “sorry” that we get to go back to our lives with our partners and that we have mundane stuff to worry about! “Sorry” is the only word that works here!

You made me acutely aware again: I am grateful that we have the small stuff to worry about! AND we have each other!

Working my ass off in this house!

Hubby exclaimed last night: “I am working my ass off in this house!”

I had to hide my smile. Yes, that is how we all feel one time or another! You work during the day, and then you come home, and you work even harder. Welcome to real life! (Evil smile)

Welcome to how women / wives / mothers feel most of the time!

It is a very far stretch from when Hubby reminisced about his single life where he flopped down in a chair with a coke and take away. And that was it for the day!

Now we are a family. Dinner needs to be made. The kitchen needs to be cleaned. Washing needs to be done, especially after a weekend of camping where we could not do the normal weekend washing... The children need attention and whatever else!

I have said time and again that I have a wonderful Hubby, my Millennium Man. He really does his share in the house! I could not have done it without him. (No, actually I can! Because it was only me and the teen for a couple of years after the divorce...)

But nowadays we expect some more from both of the sexes. I don’t think it is only us?
Hubby wants me to work. (Financially it is also not possible for me to stay at home. We need the second salary.) He grew up in a house where his mother was a SAHM (Stay-at-home-mum). She used to give his dad and the children a lot of grief, and Hubby believes it is because she had nothing to occupy her than thinking up a lot of SH*T. And taking it out on them!

I expect my husband to do his fair share around the house. When I am working a full day, I also want him to help out with the normal household duties. That is onlcamping weekeny fair. I remember how angry I used to get when my dad got home at night, and expected to sit down to a dinner which my working mother had to conjure up. In his favour: he always helped with the washing of the dishes!

Nowadays it is 50-50!(Powerwoman expects nothing less!)

How does it work in your households?

Missing Dad

The Hubby was away for a day and a night! He was missed!

The toddler announced around every corner or sound: “Pappa!”

  • Going down the steps for breakfast (she is used to seeing him busy making breakfast in the mornings).
  • Opening up the garage door.
  • The sound of cars driving past in the complex.
  • Undressing her for her bath, and she running to the bathroom.
  • Footsteps down the stairs.
  • The sound of a door opening.

She exclaims: “Pappa!”, and looks at u with enquiring eyes! Then we tell her he is working, and that he will be back. But we are not sure that she understands us...

We missed him too... It feels like everything is out of zinc when he is not here. Nobody to help with the toddler. Nobody to make us wonderful food. (He is by far the best chef in our valley!) Nobody to tell about our day. Nobody to share a glass of wine with. Or to watch our favourite tv show V together...

We missed you, Dries!

(And now he is going way for the weekend as well! Sad face here! )

The Hubby

I have said before: I am very lucky with the Hubby! He is my MM – my millennium man!

He WORKS! That scores big time with me! For some it would be unfathomable, but it happens that it is not a given in certain households. Years back, in a previous life, I had an X (the cancelled one) who did not think it was that important for a husband to work. As long as the wife is working...

Hubby helps with everything, and even more. We are getting treated with the most wonderful dishes that he instinctively conjures up. (I can’t do it- I have to use my same known recipes again and again, or I need guidance from a recipe book.) He just whips it up! No wonder we are struggling with the weight! (Smile)

He is also a wonderful partner with regards the two daughters. He drives the teen to school, and mostly picks her up again. He does not complain when she wants to go out, and have to pick her up at ten or later at night. He helps with changing nappies, and bathing and feeding of the toddler.

He was driving us three back from Pretoria last night, which is about an hour’s trip. It was after ten, and all of us were fast asleep. Hubby said he was really struggling to keep his eyes open. He was turning the air-conditioning up, and shaking his head to keep awake.

Thanks, Hubby, for looking so well after you precious cargo, not only when you are the driver!
