You think you are safe

Until you are not, anymore!

My husband came home yesterday, to see a camera on a couch where it is not supposed to be. Only to find that we have been burgled, and that he must have surprised them...

It seems they came through a small opening in the window. Without breaking it, and closing it again! Thanks, burglars!

With the exception of my jewelry, they did not make a mess. They took out the laptops and cameras out of their bags, and meticulously sorted through my jewelry and only took some stuff!

It's the second burglary (14 years back in a different place) that they haven't taken my pearls, and my silver.

That's the way to go, apparently! With pearls and silver!

We thought we were okay after we had put in extra steel gates, and burglar bars when we moved in. Also because we are living in a complex, irritatingly squashed in next to each other!

It doesn't help!

How do they get in through the security gates?

Why did nobody see them?

Is it an inside job? (Most probably)

I was extremely impressed with the police coming out within about two hours last night, and taking the statement. And we have a case number already! Thumbs up to Constable Monwametsi and Constable Mulondo of the Honeydew Police Station.

I am now waiting for finger prints to be taken, and or extra burglar bars to be put in throughout the house.

With a pepper spray in my hand, and jumping each time I hear something creak outside...

O, and hitting my head because I did not back-up my photos for quite a while. I hope it was in 2912? (Idiot!)

Back up those photos now!

In search of a view

Cappuccinos view at Northgate
I love having a view in my surroundings! (Don't we all?) I feel much more invigorated when I have something to look at to connect me back to the earth...
Especially with this urban lifestyle of ours where we look into four walls at the office!

On Friday evening I really felt like having a view while eating a traditional fish and chips. I would have loved to have been able to go for a quick drive out to the beach, and watch the sun set over the waves... *sigh*

We could not think of one place in our immediate surroundings in Johannesburg where we could go for a view. I thought of Cappuccinos at Northgate Mall. I knew that the view was limited to the smokers, but I thought we could try our luck!

Not so lucky! We were not allowed into the smoker's area because under 18s are not allowed! I totally agree with the rule, but I feel that they are wasting prime space on smokers. It should be opened up to all their clients!
I love Cappuccinos food, but it gets a thumbs down because of this!

See the photo on top for the view that we got in the end! Very sad for a Friday evening...

Maybe I am just in need of a holiday?

I also found this cellphone photo of my previous lodgings of the view I had from my flat in the suburbs! It really helped me zone down by just looking over the surrounding hills.

Do you also find inspiration in a view over the landscape?
Do you know of a restaurant in Johannesburg with a lovely view?

Grateful for water from a tap

After this weekend I am grateful for being able to turn a tap and water pours from it...

We had four water pipes bursting in our complex over the weekend.

We could not do our normal washing of clothes or dishes. We could not bath! I had to rethink the way I brush my teeth when there was no water gushing from a tap. Small things, but when you are suddenly confronted with its absence, you realise how important it really is!

I am truly grateful for water from a tap!

The burst water pipes also affected the power supply, which they had to switch off.

I am truly grateful for being able to press a switch, and the lights go on...
I can make coffee with the flick of a switch!

Thank you for power and for water in my house!

Who steals a garden umbrella?

The weather is like summer here. And weekends translate into being outside and braais(barbeques). We had a patio umbrella the previous weekend.

This weekend it was gone!

Who steals garden umbrellas? It is a very heavy, especially with the metal base. Dries walked around in our complex to see if someone had nicked it. We can’t imagine seeing someone walking out with it under their arms. Not that it would be that strange... Reality is stranger than fiction!

It could have been the garden services on Wednesday. They trimmed our neighbour’s trees, and it’s possible they could have smuggled the umbrella and stand out with the tree branches.

The case of the missing umbrella... Another crime statistic? No, not even worth mentioning here with our large crime levels in South Africa.

Just suck it up! It is very frustrating! It’s not like we have back pocket money on hand to go out and buy a new one immediately...

What has been stolen from you that are worth a lot to you, but not worth going to the police about it?
